The company picked up Enable Midstream and Lotus Midstream before completing its largest recent deal, the $7.1 billion purchase of Crestwood Equity Partners.

The Crestwood acquisition strengthened Energy Transfer‘s position in both the Permian Basin and the Bakken Shale while also giving the company its first meaningful presence in the emerging Powder River Basin. Warren described the fit between the two companies in simple terms.

“They are very compatible,” Warren said of Crestwood’s connectivity to Energy Transfer’s existing network, adding that some work remained to connect the two systems through planned capital construction. The comment reflects a pattern that has defined Kelcy Warren’s approach to acquisitions throughout his career: identify assets that fit naturally alongside what the company already owns, then invest in the infrastructure needed to tie them together.

Warren has been candid about how much of this growth came from responding to circumstances rather than executing a plan laid out years earlier. “I’d like to tell you that we saw everything in advance and we’re smarter than everybody else, but that’s just not true,” he said. “We’ve been very reactive here, but I think our reactions have been pretty good.”

That reactive approach has nonetheless produced one of the largest midstream networks in North America.
