The career of Michael Polk did not arrive at its most visible chapter without considerable preparation. Years at Kraft Foods and Unilever gave him hands-on experience across nearly every dimension of leading a global consumer goods company, from brand management and regional operations to large-scale integrations and international expansion. By the time Newell Rubbermaid came calling, Polk was ready.

After earning his MBA from Harvard Business School, Polk joined Kraft Foods and spent years working his way through increasingly senior roles. He led the Post Cereals Division in North America, managed the Asia Pacific region for Kraft Foods International, and played a central role in integrating Nabisco into Kraft following its acquisition. Each of those assignments required a different set of skills and a willingness to operate in unfamiliar territory.

In 2003, Unilever recruited Polk to lead its U.S. Foods business. Over the following years, he was promoted to president of the Americas, where he oversaw all brands and operations across North America and Latin America. His work implementing the “One Unilever” operating model improved commercial execution, helped accelerate growth, and increased operating margins. He later moved to London to serve as president, Global Food, Home and Personal Care, with responsibility for all category strategies and innovations company-wide.

The Board Seat That Came Before the CEO Role

Polk was appointed to Newell Rubbermaid’s board of directors in 2009, two years before he became the company’s CEO. That transition from director to executive gave Michael Polk Newell Brands an unusually clear-eyed view of the company’s situation before he took formal responsibility for it.

During his eight years leading Newell, Michael Polk grew the company’s net sales from $5.4 billion to $9.4 billion and nearly tripled its enterprise value. The Kraft and Unilever years were not just resume entries; they were the training ground that made that run possible. Refer to this article for additional information.
