Kelcy Warren, the co-founder and executive chairman of Energy Transfer, has significantly impacted the energy sector over the
past three decades. With roots in East Texas, Warren’s journey from a
small-town upbringing to leading one of the largest pipeline networks in North
America is nothing short of remarkable. 

Born in Gladewater and raised in White Oak, Kelcy Warren graduated from the University of Texas at
Arlington before starting his career at Lone Star Gas Co. Kelcy Warren’s path took a pivotal turn when he joined the pipeline and refining
company, Endevco. During his tenure, Warren met investors Ray C. Davis and Ben
Cook, with whom he later founded Energy Transfer in 1996. 

Initially, Energy Transfer focused on natural gas pipelines in East Texas. The company’s growth
accelerated rapidly, particularly after the acquisition of pipeline assets in
the wake of the Enron collapse. This period of strategic expansion saw Energy
Transfer acquiring significant assets, including those from Aquila Inc. and the
Houston Pipeline System. 

One of the most emotionally significant deals for Kelcy Warren was
the 2012 acquisition of Sunoco. Warren’s father had spent his career with
Sunoco, making this acquisition deeply personal. Beyond its sentimental value,
the Sunoco deal was a strategic masterstroke, valued at $5.3 billion, and
marked a significant expansion into the crude oil sector. 

More recently, Energy Transfer has continued its growth trajectory through notable
acquisitions, such as Enable Midstream and Crestwood Equity Partners, the
latter valued at $7.1 billion. These deals have solidified Energy Transfer’s
presence in key regions like the Permian Basin and Bakken Shale. 

Kelcy Warren’s approach has always been to make Energy Transfer a more efficient and expansive
