Founded in 2012, Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water is a Hawaiian premium drinking water company has experienced exponential growth. The company not only considers financial growth but also puts into consideration its social and environmental impact to the society.
Before sourcing, Waiakea water passes through volcanic rocks which enrich it in potassium, calcium and magnesium, minerals that are beneficial to the body. It is also rich in electrolytes and naturally alkaline. Even with the shipping from Hawaii to the United States, the water has been certified CarbonNeutral.
In September 2017, Waiakea announced its anticipated switch a 100 percent recyclable plastic and fully degradable bottle in 2018. This significant step aims at enhancing sustainable waste management for the beverage brand. Currently, their bottles are made from recycled plastics. The switch makes the company the first one to incorporate TimePlast’s nano-additive technology in containers.
According to Ryan Emmons, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the company, this is a shift from the traditional forms of inventions which have focused on making plastics better and stronger as opposed to weaker to enhance degradation.
Since approaches towards sustainable plastic elimination have been to try and make biodegradable plastic to curb pollution which has borne no fruits, the company seeks to bridge this gap. They have taken to chemically degrading plastics during the manufacturing process which aims at accelerating the natural degradation process. This, Ryan says, does not make their plastic biodegradable but instead converts the polymer into carbon-based wax, which is biodegradable.
After years of experimenting and finally creating a product with qualities similar to those of regular plastic, they obtained a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office on the degradation of plastic. It is the first and only company patented for the nano-degradation of plastic in the world.
In addition to their efforts in sustainable waste management, they have partnered with PumpAid to donate clean water to deserving communities in Africa. For every bottle of Waiakea water sold, 650ML of pure water is given to these disadvantaged rural communities.
With a product that has health benefits, is environmentally friendly and sustainable, it’s “Drink Healthy, Drink Sustainably, Drink Ethically” tagline is suitable and Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water can only continue to blossom.
